• A long roll of butcher paper
• Construction paper
• Scissors
• Pencils
• Crayons
• Markers
• Tape

What to Do

 

1. On a chalkboard or chart paper, make a chart titled "What's on a Farm?" Give the chart five columns and at the head of each column, write the following words: Crops, Farm Places, Animals, Actions, and Equipment.

    

2. Make sure children understand the meaning of these words, then ask them for examples of each. As examples are offered, write them in the appropriate column. If students need help to start, you can suggest words like corn; silo, orchard; horses, chickens; plowing, harvesting; tractor.

    

3. Plan the farm mural. Lay out a large piece of butcher paper and ask for ideas on which words from the chart to illustrate, and where each illustration should go.

    

4. Have children begin to draw the mural. Each child can choose a section or a particular illustration to work on. Have children sketch in pencil at first, then color their work with crayons or markers.

    

5. Display the completed mural in the classroom or hall.
